Santorini-Thira: Is the lost city of Atlantis here?
Crescent-shaped Santorini (or Thira), the precious gem of Aegean sea, is actually a group of islands: Thira, Thirassia, Aspronissi, Palea and Nea Kameni, found in the southernmost part of the Cyclades islands.
The whole group of Santorini islands is an active volcano, probably the only volcano on earth with its crater below sea level. The islands forming Santorini came into existence as a result of intensive volcanic activity; twelve huge eruptions occurred, once every 20,000 years, each one of them causing the collapse of volcano’s central part, creating a large crater (caldera).
Santorini is truly a unique place to visit with breathtaking scenery. Whether arriving by sea or air, the first sight of the island causes awe and astonishment. It’s one of the only holiday destinations where you can swim in exquisitely clear waters inside the crater of an active volcano!
The island is considered to be the most sought after place for a romantic getaway in Greece. It also has a growing reputation as a wedding destination for couples from all over the world. A trip to Santorini with the other half is a dream to come true for many. Viewing Oia’s famous sunset is one of the ultimate romantic experiences!
